Global European Space: Problems of Integration through the Prism of Intercultural Communication

On May 18th 2017 the projects LETSDO (Learning Europe Through Studying and Discovering Opportunities) and “Jean Monnet Chair on the Best European Practices of Quality Assurance” (JM4EQA) of the Jean Monnet program under the auspices of the European Union hosted the international forum "Education Without Borders: Modern Approaches and Best Practices." The organizers of the forum are the EU grant winners from the chairs "World Languages and Cultures" and "Pedagogical Measurements" at Don State Technical University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia.

Education has always been one of the main issues of the state policy worldwide, since the future of any country depends on its quality. The educational environment of Don State Technical University is no exception. Today DSTU is an advanced center for science and education in the south of Russia. One of the principles of the policy is a combination of an international educational process with the achievements and traditions of the Russian higher school.

Half-day poster presentations took place in the Poster Area of DSTU Congress Hall. The posters were developed by ITO the Russian-Italian Culture Center "Dante Alighieri", the International Language Center "Language Link", the Youth Travel Agency “Startravel”, the Methodological Consulting Center Pilot Elt, the Korean Language Education and Culture Centre, the French Language and Culture Center "Alliance Francaise", the Language Training Center "Goodwin", the DSTU German Language and Culture Center.

At 11:00 am the plenary session began. The welcoming speech was made by Deputy Rector for DSTU International Activities S.V. Shvedova and Head of the Department of Secondary Professional Education and Interaction with Higher Educational Institutions A.D. Sukhenko (Rostov-on-Don, Russia). The guest speakers were Director of the Federal Institute for Education Quality Assessment S. N. Ponomarenko, Director of the Institute of Lifelong Pedagogical Education of RUDN University A.G. Yershov (Moscow, Russia), Head of Educational Programs Department, Head of the Department of Lifelong Psychology and Pedagogy Education, Ivanovo State University A.A. Malygin (Ivanovo, Russia), Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Chief Specialist of the Federal Center for Accreditation of Doctors M.B. Chelyshkova (Moscow, Russia), Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor at Herzen State Pedagogical University, Member of the Expert Committee on Educational Policy B.V. Avvo (St. Petersburg, Russia).

Among the participants of the forum were residents of the EU: Jean-Pierre Rene Lenotre, President of the Association of the French Language Friends Rambouillet (France), João Carlos Mendonso-João, Lecturer at the Camões Institute Center for Portuguese Language and Culture (Portugal), Gustavo Sanchez Canales, Professor of Philology and Didactics Department at Madrid Autonomous University (Spain). Much interest and lively response of the audience was evoked by the report of the plenary speaker V.I. Zvonnikov, General Director of Management Education Development Association, a member of the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry Committee for the promotion of professional and business education. The report was dedicated to the trends and problems of higher professional education. The report on the use of linguistic content and its integration into the educational process presented by Gustavo Sanchez Canales, Professor of Philology and Didactics Department at Madrid Autonomous University, aroused interest among the scholars. Urgent issues were raised in the report "Youth and Discourses of Our Time: Urgent Problems and Risks" made by S.V. Ionova, PhD, Professor of Russian Language and Documentation Department at Volgograd State University (Volgograd, Russia). A lively discussion was prompted by the report “Teaching the Generation "Z" English "made by Yu.A. Smirnov, Head of the Center for Linguistic Education of JSC "Publishing House" Prosveshchenie " (Moscow, Russia).

At 2:30 pm "Global European Space: Problems of Integration through the Prism of Intercultural Communication" conference sessions and workshops started. The topics under discussion covered the following: Lifelong Learning: Best European Practices (moderator: Ph.D., Associate Professor of World Languages and Cultures Chair, DSTU, L.W. Savvateeva, the key employee of the LETSDO project), Language in the Global European Space: Traditions and Innovations (moderator: Ph.D, Professor of World Languages and Cultures Chair, DSTU, G.G. Matveeva), Youth of Europe and Russia: An Overview of Current Issues (moderator: senior lecturer of World Languages and Cultures Chair, DSTU, the key employee of the LETSDO project M.A. Kuzhelev), Global Art Space (moderator: Ph.D., Associate Professor of World Languages and Cultures Chair, DSTU, the key employee of the LETSDO project L.I. Gornitskaya). Over 50 reports were discussed during the conference. The working languages were Russian, English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

At the workshop "Lifelong Learning: Best European Practices" the issues of the role of the Spanish language in lifelong science and education were raised in the report made by Juan Antonio Nunez Cortes. The problems of professional competence in Russia and Europe were revealed in the report made by S. Yu. Shalova. The phenomenon of multilingualism as the basic approach to modern linguistic education reforming was discussed by Yu. A. Guz. E. V. Murugova, Head of World Languages and Cultures Chair (DSTU) shared the experience of the LETSDO project through the prism of innovative formats of the School - University Interaction.

The largest number of participants attended the session "Language in the Global European Space: Traditions and Innovations".

The report made by A.E. Pavlenko, "Scots from the point of view of the classification of "minor" languages of modern Europe" aroused much interest with the audience. The real functioning of language from a cognitive and a pragmatic perspectives was touched upon in the reports “Linguistic pragmatics of voluntariness in the media discourse: the ridiculous and politics” presented by M.R. Zheltukhina; "Methods of linguistic diagnosis of speech personality” made by G.G. Matveeva, "Cognitive and hermeneutic situations of understanding within the framework of the fictional discourse" given by N.F. Kryukova. As a whole, more than 20 reports were discussed.

Yu. Oberemchenko in her report “On the issue of the Internet communication of youth (on the basis of German and French data)” considered the urgent problem of youth existence in the global web of the Internet. O.I. Efremova dwelt upon the image of a Russian and a European student in the perception of young Russians.

Art as an integrating factor of cultures was discussed at the workshop "Global Art Space". The art issue of European countries was presented by the guest speakers João Carlos Mendonso-João (Portugal) in his report "Portuguese Art and Portuguese Culture Figures in the World" and Gustavo Sanchez Canales (Spain) in his report "CLIL for Teachers: from Theory to Practice" (2015). European integration as a plot paradigm of the cinema of the 20th-21st centuries" was analyzed by L.I. Gornitskaya.

At 2.30 pm the information and educational workshop "Ensuring the Quality of Education in the Context of European and Russian Education Systems Integration" was held. The issues on Russia's participation in international comparative studies of the quality of education: PISA, TALIS, PIAAC, TIMSS, PIRLS were considered in the report presented by S.N. Ponomarenko. The problems of training teachers in Russia and abroad were touched upon in the report made by M. Chelyshkova.
